Car falls down elevator shaft in New York City

On Tuesday morning, in a parking garage located on East 76th Street which is near First Avenue in Manhattan, a car plunged down an elevator shaft. An attendant of the garage was driving the car at the time. It was an elevator located on the 5th floor of a 6 floor garage.

No elevator car

I can imagine how the parking attendant must have felt once he realized that there was no elevator. How the front of the car tipped down instead of going straight into the elevator. The sick feeling and the fear once the car was on it’s way nose down in the empty shaft. As the car fell, there was another employee on a lower floor that was hurt. The fire department was called. They had to extricate the parking attendant who was driving the car. Then both the driver and the employee were transported to the Cornell Medical Center and were listed in stable condition. The car had to be pulled by pulleys down the rest of the shaft and back to the street level. There wasn’t a known reason for the elevator car not to have been there. No problems had been observed lately with the elevators except over the winter when they had a power outage. I am sure that it is being looked into. It’s a miracle that no one was killed.
