Years ago, France set the restrictions that anyone under 5ft 3″ could not be a police officer. If you weren’t at least 1.60m, you could not try to become a police officer.
Frenchmen at one time were a little shorter like Napoleon who was about 1.65m. Over the years their height increased and the requirements were increased also.
Some thought it wasn’t right that a very qualified person, could be less then 5ft3″ tall, but not be taken only because of their being a little on the short side.
The rules have now been changed. Now if a person is qualified, their height is no longer a factor in becoming an officer of the law.
Today the average Frenchman is about 1.75 where back in 1900 it was only 1.66m. Women today are 1.63m and in 1900 the average height was 1.54m. That is quite an increase over the years.
The police are happy with the new rules. The rule on height eliminated quite a few good people from being on the police force. Now they can look at quality and skill rather then height.
As far as being in the military, you still have a height requirement.
