Months Of Preparation
For Austrian Felix Baumgartner moment of his long-planned jump from the edge of the universe in which he became the first man that broke the sound barrier outside the vehicle finally arrived 14th of November, year 2012. Months of preparation, planning and analyzing whether were worth it because Felix Baumgartner again wrote his name on the pages of book of history and broke several existing world records. Preparation, flight and jump were carefully followed by the eyes of his team, scientists, and almost the entire world.
Free Fall
His capsule has find a place in the stratosphere and enabled him, equipped with spacesuit and parachute, to salute to the entire world and take a look at the Earth as a distant dot. In free fall at a speed of 1324 km/h with the pressure on the body, the spinning and the Earth that is rapidly approaching, it would be hard for anyone to remain totally calm and avoid reflex of vomiting, dizziness and enormous feeling of panic. It is hard to imagine what was going through his brain at the moments in which he tried to control his body in the free fall and blood that rushed to his head threatening to loss consciousness and control. During the free fall that lasted about 4 minutes and 20 seconds helplessness, screaming and swearing are completely natural and human reaction to an extremely stressful, dangerous and very unusual situation.
Sound Barrier
However, he didn’t lose the strength and soberness and he managed not to press the safety buttons too early, managed to break the sound barrier and then pulled the lever to open the parachute. Baumgartner passed the last few miles with parachute, until his feet touched the firm ground of New Mexico and led to huge applause in the control room, and probably in the rest of the world. At this moment it is difficult to predict all the ways in which scientists will benefit from this historic jump, particularly through information on the behavior of the human body at these altitudes and the ways it free falls, understanding more and more the infinite and complex universe.
