New Meaning Of Beekeeping
At the mention of bees, most people find that honey and other sweet things are their first association. It is not so for Professor Norman Gary from California who has found a summer job in Greece. By allowing thousands of these insects to crawl all over him while he plays the clarinet, his performance gives a whole new meaning to the beekeeping. Before every performance he covers himself in a special pheromone that acts as an attractant to bee drones. Unfortunately, instead of sweet nectar that bees are expecting, they end up with bad taste of a crazy old professor in their mouth.
Completely opposite to the horrific pictures of a man covered in bees, he plays the cheerful melody of “When The Saints Go Marching In.” In addition to profits from his show, he gets free acupuncture treatment. He get’s stabbed each performance, he even inhaled a bee once. Fortunately, his eyes are not damaged yet. Except for the shock of the audience, bees also give him the authentic afro look that goes so well with this gospel melodies.
Honeybee are generally not aggressive organisms, since their nowadays form is a result of a countless crossings between individuals with good qualities of which most preferable are amount of honey they make, and the relative tameness compared to wild types. Anyhow, ignorant person without proper preparation would be the sentenced to an extremely painful death if allowed to enter into such a small room with hives. Bees communicate with movements and pheromones, scent molecules that serve them in communication. Classic procedure that stunts bees and allows man to handle them with such ease is smoking, which blocks the pheromones in the hive and prevents the “alarm sound” which would make them very aggressive. The professor knows this well, and that’s what allows him to make bees dance to his tunes.
