The Tunnel
It’s not known how many people took part in this devious scheme. It is figured that to dig that tunnel, which was 100 feet in length would have taken members at least 6 months. The tunnel was dug out right under the ATM machine. It had been dug using machines to cut through over 15 inches of concrete. The tunnel began at a railroad embankment near the back of the store. They dug it under a parking lot and then beneath the base of the store. The tunnel was about 4 feet tall and was supported using roof supports. They also had put lights in it. The job seemed to be a very thoughout one.
Was it worth it?
It seems like a lot of work. If too many people were involved in the working of it, £6,000 doesn’t seem like it would go very far in compensation for all the work they did. The thiefs may have thought there would be more money in the ATM than there was. The robbery happened on January 2nds and no one had filled the machine since it had been a bank holiday. The machine was located at Blockbuster in the Fallowfield, Shopping area. Another theft of this sort was attempted back in 2007 but it was stopped. Police are thinking maybe the same group planned out this one.
Will they be caught?
It always seems a plan of this sort never stays quiet. Someone always talks. Or sounds may have been heard drawing attention to what they were doing. Just carrying the machinery in to do the work would have brought attention. It’s also possible that their friends may have started wondering what they were doing, possibly disappearing every night and followed them to the site. Most likely the culprits will be caught. For now, they spoke of no definite leads.
