Have you ever received a text message on your cell phone from an unknown number? Was it a message in which you learn that someone from your contacts has changed its number or it was some kind of fraud? In recent years a great change occurred in the development of communication media. To the delight of all consumers new social networks that connect you with the whole world are constantly created and new cell phones with more and more advanced options are invent. This development is the reason why recently more and more spammers use this type of media for their fraudulent activities.
Threatening Text Message
On Sunday 22 of July a large number of Australians received threatening text message. In this message thousands of frightened people received completely identical death threat which said: “Sum1 paid me to kill you. get spared, 48hrs to pay $5000. If you inform the police or anybody, death is promised… E-mail me now: killerking247yahoo.com.“ How would you react to this text message? Although this type of fraud called „Hitman Scam“ is already quite common, it does make it any less frightening.
Rapid Reaction Of Police
Although the police responded quickly, they can not be sure that someone has not already paid the money, especially when it comes to people who have just begun to use a cell phones recently and are not aware of all purposes mobile communications can be used today. Which is why the police warns the public that if someone has forwarded any money they should immediately contact the police and bank. The FBI took over the investigation of this “Hit-man scam” which is considered one of the largest-scale scams and it is believed that the perpetrators of this fraud are not from Australia. We hope that this incident will encourage people to be more careful about these types of scams in the future.
