The tree had been decorated with shoes since the 1940′s. But when it caught fire, the rubber soles helped keep the fire burning.
The tree was a very much loved Priest River landmark. It was called, “shoe tree”.
People visiting the tree had placed shoes on it since the 1940′s. It had hundreds of pairs of shoes on it. They even hung from it branches.
On Thursday, firemen found the tree engulfed in flames. Because of the rubber on the shoes, it was difficult to put out the hot flames.
They had tried to stop people from adding shoes to the tree, it had become quite a site by the road and was shown on many travel type websites.
